Bruce Spivey, M.D., M.S., M.Ed., is recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Member in recognitions of his contributions to the Healthcare field. Dr. Spivey served as an Ophthalmologist, Educator and Health Facility Administrator. He brings over 50 years of field experience, as well as expertise in the specialty of Ophthalmology, to his role. As part of his impressive resume of work, Dr. Spivey served as the Departmental Chairman for 16 years and President of a multihospital system for over 14 years and as a hospital CEO for 16 years. He served as the President and CEO of Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center, now known as California Pacific Medical Center; as CEO of California Healthcare Systems in the San Francisco Bay Area; as President and Chief Executive Officer of Northwestern Healthcare Network in Chicago; and as President of Columbia-Cornell Care in New York. He served in the U.S. Army for two years as Chief of Ophthalmology at the 85th Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam. He also served as the founding CEO of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for 17 years. Several of the roles were served concurrently. Dr. Spivey earned his Bachelor’s degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He then went on to complete his Medical degree as well as a Master of Science degree from the University of Iowa, and subsequently a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Illinois. Dr. Spivey served as the President of the International Council of Ophthalmology for 8 years and as Secretary General for 12. He served as the President of the American Board of Medical Specialties, President of the American Ophthalmological Society; and President of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. He is also a Trustee of Coe College, Helen Keller International, and was a Founder of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company. He is Chairman of the Board of Pacific Vision Foundation. Additionally, Dr. Spivey is the author of over 130 scientific education and management articles. He has received the two highest awards in American ophthalmology – The Howe Medal of the American Ophthalmological Society and the Laureate Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in the field, Dr. Spivey is the recipient of over 30 medals and awards in ophthalmology and medicine, as well as the Bronze Star awarded by the U.S. Army. Dr. Spivey dedicates this recognition to his wife, Amanda Birge Spivey, for her continuing love and support, along with his children and grandchildren.
