Kimberly Faith Jones

Kimberly Faith Jones, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., is recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Member in recognition of her contributions to the Higher Education field. Dr. Jones’ professional title is Associate Professor of History at Long Island University – Brooklyn. She brings over 21 years of experience, as well as expertise in the areas of education, teaching, mentoring and race relations, to her role. “I am a historian with research interests in comparative race relations (Brazil and the United States), the Black consciousness movement in Brazil, the history of African American women in the United States and the Black women’s movement in Brazil,” Dr. Jones said on her TeachArchives profile. “At Long Island University Brooklyn Campus, I teach World Civilizations to 1500, World Civilizations since 1500, Latin American History, Comparative Slavery and Freedom (focusing on the United States, Cuba and Brazil); Latin America in World History, and History of African-American Women in the United States.” “Visiting the archives allows me to introduce first-year students to the actual practice of history,” Dr. Jones continued. “Rather than simply reading about runaway slaves or the NAACP’s anti-lynching campaign in their textbooks, my students have the opportunity to ‘do the work’ of historians and interact with primary documents. This helps them develop a greater appreciation for the subject matter and the process of archival research.” Outside of the classroom, Dr. Jones’ job requires administrative duties. She formerly served as the Chari of the Urban Studies Department, and is currently working to revive the program. Dr. Jones earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Area Studies from Trinity College in Hartford. She then went on to complete her Master of Arts in Latin American Studies, as well as a Ph.D. in History, both from the University of California – Los Angeles. To further her professional development, Dr. Jones is a member of the National Association of Professional Women, as well as Young Movement. When not working, she enjoys quilting, and spends time raising her daughter. Dr. Jones dedicates this recognition to the loving memory of her grandparents – Katie and Brimson Livingston, and Inez and Edmond Jones. She also dedicates this recognition to her parents, Willie G. Jones and Katherine Jones, and to her professional mentor, E. Bradford Burns. For more information, visit www.liu.edu/Home/Brooklyn.
