A highly accomplished medical professional with well over two decades of diverse experience in the healthcare industry, Thomas Michael DeBerardino, M.D. has earned acknowledgement from Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Professional among Medical Professionals.

As a result of his outstanding body of work as well as the tremendous amount of success he has achieved throughout his professional career along with his consistent demonstration of passion, vision, dedication and diligence, Dr. DeBerardino is to be considered among the upper echelon of his field. Utilizing his astounding wealth of knowledge and extensive experience in the medical field as well as his extraordinary leadership and teaching abilities, Dr. DeBerardino currently serves as an Associate Professor for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center, where he specializes in the areas of sports medicine as well as advanced reconstruction and arthroscopy of the shoulder, hip and knee.

Paralleling his work as an educator, he also acts as an Orthopaedic Surgeon with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center’s New England Musculoskeletal Institute.  The New England Musculoskeletal Institute is a leading provider of comprehensive care for a wide array of problems affecting bones, joints, muscles and connective tissue. At the facility, patients receive meticulous care for various musculoskeletal problems. Services provided at the institute range from joint replacement surgery and spine surgery to care for chronic conditions, such as osteoporosis and arthritis. The New England Musculoskeletal Institute is dedicated to assisting patients in the recovery of strength and mobility.

In addition to his work as a professor and surgeon, Dr. DeBerardino serves as a Team Physician and Orthopaedic Consultant for the university’s athletic teams, including the football squad and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. He has also served in the capacity of team physician for the United Football League’s Hartford Colonials.

Furthermore, Dr. DeBerardino is currently affiliated with the University of Connecticut Health CenterJohn Dempsey Hospital and the Hartford Hospital. In his role as a surgeon, Dr. DeBerardino performs multiple procedures, including anterior cruciate ligament surgery, arthroscopic joint reconstruction surgery, arthroscopic joint surgery, hip arthroscopy, joint drainage, joint repair, bone repair, knee arthroscopy, meniscectomy, myofascial trigger point injection, shoulder arthroscopy, viscosupplementation with hyaluronate, and rotator cuff surgery. He has a particular interest in the management of complex injuries of the knee and shoulder along with arthroscopic management of hip impingement in young active adults. Dr. DeBerardino is actively involved in taking preventative measures, such as the use of hip arthroscopic procedures to avoid the development of arthritis and osteotomies as well as cartilage repair procedures to limit degeneration of the knee joint.

 

Endlessly engaged in the research of state-of-the-art procedures designed to improve surgical practice, Dr. DeBerardino and his co-investigators are presently in the process of evaluating new methods of enhancing tendon to bone healing with the goal of improving the results of arthroscopic and open repair of torn ligaments and cartilage injuries to the shoulder and knee. The fundamental aim of this research is to employ these techniques in order to successfully  repair torn rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder and cruciate injuries to the knee as well as cartilage and meniscal transplantation.

Dr. DeBerardino’s professional proficiency has also led to him earning a role as a consultant for Arthrex, which is a company that is dedicated to helping surgeons treat their patients more efficiently. Arthrex is a pioneering global medical device company that serves as a leader in new product development and medical education in orthopaedics.

Already responsible for the creation of over 7,500 innovative products and surgical procedures designed to advance minimally invasive orthopaedics worldwide, the company continues to grow aggressively with an increased  demand for their products across the globe.

Prior to joining the team at the University of Connecticut Health Center in July of 2009, Dr. DeBerardino spent over eight years at the United States Military Academy’s Keller Army Community Hospital, where he served in the role of Team Physician for the collegiate athletic teams and Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship program. During his time there, Dr. DeBerardino provided orthopaedic care for the 4,400 student athletes at the academy.

He also spent four years as the Director of the John A.  Feagin Sports Medicine Fellowship, during which time he was responsible for supervising the training of two sports medicine orthopaedic surgery fellows each academic year. Regularly sought after for his vast knowledge in the field of medicine, Dr. DeBerardino has been the author of over 50 scientific articles. His writings cover a variety of subjects, including ligament, tendon and cartilage injuries of the knee and shoulder.

His work has been featured in such prestigious industry publications as the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and the Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review.

Further evidencing his remarkable reputation in his field, Dr. DeBerardino has been a member of numerous national and international professional  societies, including the American Medical Association, AmericanOrthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, International ACL Study Group, Magellan Society, and the Herodicus Society. On top of the substantial amount of expertise he has gained through his vast professional experience, Dr. DeBerardino is a highly educated individual who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the United States Military Academy at West Point as well as a Doctor of Medicine degree from the New York Medical College. Additionally, he has obtained certification in Orthopaedic Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Also during his collegiate career, Dr. DeBerardino completed an internship in transitional medicine and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Tripler Army Medical Center. Additionally, he completed a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research and a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine through the United States Military Academy with rotations at the Vail Steadman-Hawkins Clinic and the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Over the course of his enormously successful career, Dr. DeBerardino has also received recognition for his performance excellence on numerous occasions,  leading him to receive several prestigious awards.

Among his plethora of honors are the AOSSM NCAA Research Award for the Epidemiology of Shoulder Instability in a College-Aged Athletic Population, the Air cast Award for Clinical Science Presentation, Army Legion of Merit Medal, Army “A” Academic Achievement Designator Award, Kirk Award Honorable Mention for Presentation, Army Commendation Medal, Best Scientific Paper from the Hawaii Orthopaedic Association, Best Scientific Paper from the Hawaii Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and an ESSKA-AOSSM European Traveling Fellowship. In addition, Dr. DeBerardino was named as an AAOS Leadership Fellows Program Selectee.
