Dr. Christopher Stephen Lange

Dr. Christopher Stephen Lange, S.B., D.Phil., KCOM, is recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Professional Member in the field of Medical Research. Dr. Lange is a Professor of Radiation Oncology, Director of Radiation Research, and Professor of Molecular & Cell Biology. An esteemed scientist, teacher, and researcher, Dr. Lange began his biomedical research career in 1962 and has been working for SUNY Downstate for over thirty years. In his current capacity, Dr. Lange is currently the Director of Radiation Research and Associate Director of the Radiation Oncology Residency Program. SUNY Downstate Medical Center is one of the largest colleges of medicine in New York and is the only academic medical center combining health education, research, and patient care services to the residents of Brooklyn. Dr. Lange’s primary focus has been in regards to his patented Hybrid Spheroid Assay, which measures the sensitivity of individual patient’s Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) to proposed treatments. In addition, throughout his career, Dr. Lange has made significant innovations in the areas of assay development, cell biology, cancer research, radiation biology, molecular biology, stem cells and much more. Dr. Lange holds a US (and world-wide) Patent (Methods of Assaying Sensitivity of Cancer Stem Cells to Therapeutic Modalities) which enables the individualization of cancer treatment selection for optimal results for each patient. The patent also covers use of the assay to determine which new drugs/agents under development warrant going to clinical trial. Since the cost of a new oncology drug/agent is ca. $100 million, with about 85% of this cost in clinical trials, and ca. 85% of these trials fail, being able to test if the new agent is effective against patient CSCs, the cells that determine if the treatment can be curative (as opposed to palliative) offers large potential cost savings in oncology drug development. Dr. Lange is a member of several professional organizations, including the: American Association for Cancer Research, Radiation Research Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Biophysical Society, NY Academy of Sciences, and has served on the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society Board of Directors & Executive Committee, and more. Dr. Lange received his S.B. degree in Physics (with a selfconstructed major in Biophysics) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and subsequently received his doctorate (D.Phil. (Fac. Med.)) from Oxford University. Dr. Lange served as a Sr. Scientific Officer with the National Health Service (UK) in the Paterson Labs, Christie Hospital & Holt Radium Inst., Manchester, then as Ass’t Professor of Radiology and of Radiation Biology & Biophysics (the USAEC Atomic Energy Project at Rochester) in the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, and currently, is Professor of Radiation Oncology and of Molecular & Cell Biology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. In recognition of his professional accolades, Dr. Lange was the recipient of several accolades, including the Knight’s Cross, Order of Merit, named Life-time Honorary Consultant to Swietokrzyskie Centrum Onkologii (HolyCross Province Oncology Center, Poland), the Certificate of Gratitude for Contributions to Science (Japan), and more.
