Karen H. Harum, M.D., is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Achiever in the field of Medicine as a Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician at Clinic for Special Children.
Devoting her professional life to the holistic care of children with complex developmental disorders, Dr. Harum has over 32 years of experience in her field. Specializing in the Neuroscience of Learning and Autism, Dr. Harum provides accurate diagnoses, whole child treatments, and specialty care for all children with developmental disabilities and behavioral problems including ADD, ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Celebrating every child’s individuality, Dr. Harum creates customized, comprehensive treatment plans for all of her patients to optimize wellness and restore cellular health.
The Clinic for Special Children is the first and only pediatric practice offering Integrative Medicine in North Carolina. The medical team at the Clinic for Special Children consists of Fellowship Trained Neurodevelopmental Pediatricians and Patient Liaisons, valuing a “whole child” approach to treatment. Unique to the Clinic for Special Children, patient’s physical, emotional, social and environmental needs are treated through a combination of traditional medicine and functional healing modalities.
Previously, Dr. Harum served as an educator. From 2001 to 2006, she worked as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Eastern Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville, NC. Prior to this, she was an instructor in the Neurology and Developmental Medicine Department at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, MD.
A graduate of the University of Miami and Stetson University, Dr. Harum received pediatric training at the University of Miami and training in her subspecialty of neurodevelopmental disabilities at Johns Hopkins University and the Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Society for Developmental Pediatrics and the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs.
Dr. Harum has enjoyed a successful career, accumulating numerous accolades and honors throughout her professional career, including the National Research Service Award in Neuroscience in 1997 and 1999. She has recently presented data to the International Society for Autism Research on unique biomarkers of young autistic patients.
A published author, Dr. Harum has composed numerous chapters for academic books and articles for medical journals, such as “Cognitive Function, Memory and Transcription Factors” printed in Pediatric Research and “Factor V Leiden: a risk factor for cerebral palsy” printed in Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology,
