Dr. Leonard Stern is a Clinical Nephrologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Stern is also a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology, the American College of Physicians and the National Kidney Foundation. Dr. Stern earned his M.D. from New York Medical College in 1975. Dr. Stern was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society while attending medical school. Induction into AOA is one of the highest honors for which a medical student is eligible during medical school. In addition, Dr. Stern received the Samuel Spiegel Memorial Award at graduation for achieving the highest scholastic average in the graduating class. Dr. Stern specializes in the field of Nephrology, a complex field that incorporates both basic and clinical science into the practical management of patients with a variety of kidney related disorders such as chronic kidney disease, hypertension, metabolic disorders such as hyperparathyroidism, diabetes mellitus, kidney stones and renal replacement therapy including both dialysis and kidney transplants. Dr. Stern also treats patients who have had combined kidney and pancreas transplants.
Dr. Stern is a renowned specialist in the management of home dialysis, both peritoneal and hemodialysis and has been instrumental in establishing home dialysis treatment programs both in the US and overseas, most recently in Western China. In 2014, he received a humanitarian public service award from the city of Chengdu in the Sichuan province of China for his work in training physicians and nurses to perform peritoneal dialysis in the home setting. He was awarded an honorary professorship at the Jiatong Medical School to continue his teaching efforts in nephrology throughout the western China region. Dr. Stern is listed as a Best Doctor in Nephrology regionally in the northeast, nationally in the United States and Internationally.
