Yvette C. Tanhehco, M.D., Ph.D., M.S., is recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Member in the field of Medical Research. Columbia University’s Department of Pathology and Cell Biology links the correlation between examining the, “study of cell biological processes and the understanding of disease pathogenesis.” Because of the university’s rich history, the institution examines the importance of pathology medicine. Assistant Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology, Dr. Tanhehco serves as the Director of Hemotherapy and Cellular Therapy and is the Assistant Director of Transfusion Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
She has worked in her current position for the past four and a half years, bringing previous experience from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to her role. Her expertise lies in the areas of clinical pathology, transfusion medicine and clinical research. “I love the field of Clinical Pathology especially Transfusion Medicine because it is intellectually stimulating and is an umbrella field encompassing various scientific and medical specialties such as blood banking, apheresis, cell biology, microbiology, immunology and molecular biology,” Dr. Tanhehco said. “The keys to my success are hard work, perseverance, and networking.
My advice to those looking to enter the profession is to work very hard and find good mentors. Remember, it’s all about the patients.” Throughout the course of her education and training, Dr. Tanhehco earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Microbiology and Molecular and Cell Biology degree from Cornell University. She then went on to earn her Ph.D. in Viral Oncology from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, her Medical degree from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine, and her Master of Science degree in Translational Research from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Tanhehco is Board Certified in Clinical Pathology as well as Transfusion Medicine by the American Board of Pathology, and speaks English, Chinese and Tagalog. To further her professional development, Dr. Tanhehco is a member of the College of American Pathologists, American Association of Blood Banks, and American Society for Apheresis, of which she is the chair of the Apheresis Physicians committee. In recognition of her outstanding accomplishments in the field, Dr. Tanhehco was named as a 2016 Leading Physician of the World, as well as a Top Pathologist in New York by the International Association of Health Care Professionals. When not working, Dr. Tanhehco enjoys swimming, bowling, golf, movies and television and traveling- she has visited six of the seven continents.
