Leland M. Dhurjon, M.D., FRCS, is recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Professional of the Year in the Medical field. Dr. Dhurjon serves as an Ophthalmologist at the Port Arthur Health Centre and Clinic, located in Ontario, Canada. The clinic was established during the Great Depression and has sought to meet the needs of Northwestern Ontario and Thunder Bay, which is an area that generally lacks family physicians.
After the mining boom of the Thunder Bay area in 1934, “by signing medical contracts with all of the mining and timber companies in the area, the Port Arthur Clinic undertook to serve thousands of people in the area,” according to the center’s website. “With the outbreak of war in 1939, and the resultant shortage of doctors, the Clinic doctors decided to restrict their practice to Port Arthur, and relinquished their work in the district.
By 1942, the staff of the Clinic was reduced to six members, ending the war with five. When this number doubled in 1947, the Clinic was re-organized.” Dr. Dhurjon’s specialties lie in the areas of retina and retinal diseases. He earned his Medical degree from the University of the West Indies in Barbados, followed by completion of an internship at Queen Elizabeth Hospital at McGill University. Dr. Dhurjon is also Board Certified in Ophthalmology, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) and is a member of the International Association of Healthcare Professionals.
In recognition of his outstanding work in the field, Dr. Dhurjon and his team were the recipients of a generous endowment, thanks to the Lloyd and Verna Gilbart Ophthalmology Endowment Fund, whose support helps fund the Lions Vision Care Center and its equipment.
