Nancy Melan, RN, is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Achiever in the field of Medicine as a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse at Langley Memorial Hospital.
A community hospital, Langley Memorial Hospital provides numerous services, including primary, secondary, and some specialty services, as well as 24/7 emergency, general and internal medicine, general surgery, select surgical specialties, and maternity and nursery specialties. Ms. Melan serves patients at the Level IV trauma center. Her areas of expertise include hospice care, palliative care, extended care, long-term care, medical-surgical nursing, and psychiatry.
In addition to her role at the hospital, Ms. Melan serves as a preceptor at Trinity Western University where she teaches nursing students. She has fifteen years in palliative nursing, twenty-eight years as a nurse, and forty years in healthcare. Viewing patients as people and loved ones, she enjoys caring for others and ensuring their final journey is in peace, comfort, and dignity. The key to her success has been making patients smile and establishing strong bonds.
Ms. Melan advises new nurses to, “understand the difference between medical care versus compassionate care when they lose their zest for life.” She has accomplished her goal and often hears people say, “Nancy is a card.” Christmas is her favorite day to work. She has been seen kicking off her shoes, sitting on patients’ beds, watching TV, and doing their hair.
In preparation for her career, Ms. Melan earned a nursing degree from the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Canada, and a Basic Life Support Certification.
Ms. Melan dedicates this recognition to her entire fantastic team and unit, wonderful mentees, and the amazing doctors:
Dr. Maureen Adamson, Dr. Aaron Cass, and Dr. Sharon Duncan.
